Monthly Virtual Soirée

Virtual Soirée: Tuesday, January 27th, 7:30 - 8:30 PM Eastern

A Story of Artistic Brilliance and Rebellion: During the turn of the century, Alice Austen, often carrying 50 lbs of camera equipment on her bicycle, rode the streets of New York and Staten Island to document the lives of immigrant communities. In private settings, Austen playfully photographed the lives of queer women breaking gender norms. Kathleen will unpack how Austen and her work (over 7,000 images) were nearly lost to history, and why Austen's social commentary through photos is relevant and important today.
